Drive by on Newport Blvd. and you might miss this quaint sushi bar. That would be a shame because Kakurega’s chefs, Junichi Nishizawa and Shogo Suzuki, know their seafood. OC Weekly’s Edwin Goei said it “dazzled” him and Orange County Register’s Brad A. Johnson named the sushi omakase as a “Best thing I ate.” Kakurega specializes in sushi, tapas and sake.
They offer bento boxes, appetizers and fish combos for lunch. Their dinner menu includes appetizers such as okura tempura, pan fried octopus and roast duck with a balsamic reduction. New York steak and lamb chops are options for a main course, but their specialty is their sushi. Try the three kings roll, yellowfin belly or indulge in the omakase.
Kakurega serves lunch Tuesday-Friday from 11:30-2:00 and dinner Tuesday-Sunday from 5:30-10:00.
