To kick off the new summer season, Segerstrom Center for the Arts is scheduled to host for the ninth year starting July 13 a series of movies for free on Monday nights at the Arts Plaza through Aug. 10. Admission is free, and guests are encouraged to bring their beach chairs or other portable seating items, snacks and picnic dinners. Movies are to be projected on the side of Segerstrom Hall. Set-up begins at 5:30 p.m., and the movies start at dusk — about 8 p.m — so you have plenty of time to enjoy dinners, music and people watching. Here are the following movies scheduled for showing:
July 13 — Little Shop of Horrors, PG-13, 1986, 94 minutes. Adapted from the off-Broadway rock musical, Little Shop of Horrors is the cult horror comedy that narrates the story of a nerdy florist shop assistant, who finds this chance at success and romance while raising a plant that feed on human blood.
July 20 — Pitch Perfect, PG-13, 2012, 112 minutes. This modern-day musical mash-up has become the second-highest grossing musical comedy film. The film follows a college all-girls a capella singing group in their mission to pitch slap their male rivals on campus.
July 27 — The Sandlot, PG, 1993, 101 minutes. Enjoy this nostalgic coming-of-age adventure, where a new kid in town is taken under the wing of a neighborhood baseball prodigy and his fellow teammates.
Aug. 3 — My Best Friend’s Wedding, PG-13, 1997, 105 minutes. One of Julia Robert’s most memorable films, this chick flick is perfect for a summer date. When Julianne (Julia Roberts) discovers her long-time friend Michael (Dermot Mulroney) is engaged, she realizes her love for him and sets to break off the wedding to his young college student fiancée, Kimmy (Cameron Diaz).
Aug. 10 — E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, PG, 1982, 115 minutes. This Steven Spielberg masterpiece earned four Oscars, broke box office records and held the slot of the highest grossing film of all-time. This classic follows a boy, Elliot, who discovers an alien left stranded here on earth. In his quest to get the extraterrestrial (E.T.) home, the two develop a bond in a tale of friendship, despite obstacles.
