Black Friday and Shop Small Saturday in Costa Mesa

Posted on November 26, 2013 | 3:11pm

This weekend marks the biggest shopping days of the year.  Black Friday, a day synonymous with big discounts and even bigger crowds when retailers open their doors before sunrise, is generally regarded as the official beginning of the holiday “shopping season.”  More recent trends, like Shop Small Saturday and Cyber Monday, offer shoppers an early opportunity to check-off a good portion of their gift list.

“Black Friday” may sound like a daunting, negative term, but its meaning refers to a positive time for retailers.  It is typically the day that stores go from the “red” to the “black” and begin to turn a profit for the year.  Shop Small Saturday started in 2010, and unlike Cyber Monday and Black Friday which are both prominent with large retail chains, Shop Small Saturday focuses on unique, local businesses.  Whether you’re more inclined to brave swarming crowds on Black Friday or browse local retailers on Shop Small Saturday, (or maybe both) Costa Mesa has the perfect shopping destination for you.

Intergalactic Nemesis Book Two: Robot Planet Rising

Posted on November 6, 2013 | 3:36pm

The Intergalactic Nemesis returns to Segerstrom Center for the Arts with Book Two: Robot Planet Rising in the Samueli Theater.  The sequel to last season’s hit show picks up two weeks after the end of book one with the adventures of Molly Sloan and Timmy Mendez.

The star of the show is the storytelling method in this visually striking performance.  Intergalactic Nemesis combines radio-style storytelling drama with over 1,000 comic book visuals.  The show takes the original artwork from the comic book and projects the images onto a two-story high video screen.  Three actors provide the voices for all of the characters; one performer creates all of the sound effects while a keyboardist provides the score.

Over time, Halloween has evolved from its superstitious routes to today’s version better known for costumes and candy than warding off spirits.  With the autumnal holiday coming up this Thursday, it’s time to don those dress-up duds and carve the Jack-o-lantern.  This week, there are some fun Halloween festivities in Costa Mesa, so if you like good food, drinks and parties, the City of the Arts is the place to be this All Hallows Eve.
