The 2013-14 Season at Segerstrom Center for the Arts brings the power of live performances to the stage in Costa Mesa. As the leading performing arts venue in Orange County, SCFTA features Broadway hits, acclaimed musicians, international dance troupes, family friendly productions and much more.
Last night, season ticket holders, group buyers and members of the media were invited to a special preview of the upcoming season’s productions. Bob Bucci, EVP of Marketing of Broadway Across America, hosted the event and set the tone for the night by wearing a cupcake costume! SCFTA Executive Vice President Judy Morr also assisted in hosting duties, although she left the sweets-inspired wardrobe to Bucci.
The Broadway Series features two Center premieres and two new productions, but the most anticipated musical is The Book of Mormon. The South Park Creators’ play has won nine Tony Awards® and is considered by many to be one of the funniest musicals of all time! The Broadway Series also includes Evita, The Wizard of Oz, Jersey Boys, Ghost the Musical and Once. Click on the show titles for more information, show times and tickets.
The Curtain Call Series highlights two award winning shows and introduces a brand-new hit show adapted from one of the most popular shows of all time. I Love Lucy® Live On Stage takes the audience back to 1952 as members of the studio audience during the filming of two of the show’s most popular episodes. The Curtain Call Series also brings Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Chicago back to the Center. Other special productions include Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and Mamma Mia! Rain – A Tribute to the Beatles has also been added as a limited time engagement where attendees can enjoy the full range of the Fab Four’s discography live onstage.
Each year, Jazz fans throughout Southern California anticipate the return of the Jazz Series to the Center. The world-class acoustics in the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall and Samueli Theater will reverberate with the sounds of celebrated Jazz musicians. The 2013/14 series includes performances by Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club®; ACS: Gerri Allen, Terri Lyne Carrington, Esperanza Spalding; McCoy, Tyner and Joe Lovano; Dr. Lonnie Smith; Wynton Marsalis and Fred Hersch Trio.
Musical theater combined with club-style entertainment returns to SCFTA in the Cabaret Series. The Cabaret Series brings talented performers to the stage in a showcase of individual brilliance. Bernadette Peters starts the series followed by Marilyn Maye and Clint Holmes, Peter Gallagher, Patti LuPone and Jimmy Webb and Maureen McGovern.
The Concert Series at SCFTA allows music lovers to experience incredibly talented musicians in an acoustically superb environment. This year, five centuries of music will be covered with performances by the Pacifica Quartet with Marc-André Hamelin; Jeffrey Kahane, Joseph Swensen and Carter Brey; the Emerson String Quartet; St. Lawrence String Quartet and the Philharmonia Baroque Chamber Players. Other musical performances include the LA Opera in Concert in Falstaff and Thais in the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall.
Segerstrom Center for the Acts hosts some of the world’s greatest dancers during the Dance Series. The great and award-winning Russian ballerina Diana Vishneva will be highlighted on stage in the world premiere of On the Edge. Other performances that aren’t to be missed are Natalia Osipova and Ivan Vasilev; The Hamburg Ballett; Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo and the always popular Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
SCFTA’s Family Series aims to enrich, engage and entertain young people throughout Orange County. The live performances are meant to inspire creativity and provide an opportunity for families to build memories and share special moments. This year’s Family Series includes The Okee Dokee Brothers, Still Awake Still!, Cre8ion – Fluff, Snowflake, Lightwire Theater in The Ugly Duckling and the Tortoise and the Hare, Perth Theatre Company in The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer and the Intergalactic Nemesis – Book Two: Robot Planet Rising.
