The Snoopy House Holiday Display returns once again to illuminate Costa Mesa City Hall during the holiday season. The elaborate display was an east side Costa Mesa neighborhood tradition for 44 years. Due to a home foreclosure in 2011, the Peanuts-themed display moved to the City Hall building at 77 Fair Drive, located across the street from the OC Fair & Event Center.
In a partnership with city CEO Tom Hatch and the resident who displayed the lights for so many years, the holiday tradition was saved and moved to the larger venue.
The opening ceremony was a spectacle that included real snow, an appearance by Snoopy, photos with Santa Claus, holiday tree decorating and food trucks. The lights were illuminated for the first time this year. The grand marshal of the opening ceremony was Jill Schulz, daughter of Peanuts creator Charles Schulz, who gave a speech to the on-looking crowd.
The Snoopy House will feature holiday scenes with Peanuts characters and will be lit each night from Friday, December 14 – Tuesday, December 25 from 5-9 pm. Santa will visit each night from December 14-23 when kids and families will have the opportunity to take photos for free.
The Peanuts display has grown from a Costa Mesa institution to an Orange County tradition. It is estimated that over 80,000 people visit the display annually. The holiday light display has truly turned into a community project. Volunteers donate time, money and supplies to make the display available to the public.
